Visaranai: A Harsh Truth or Societal Error

Image
Since the pandemic of Covid-19 has created an equilibrium in the society regarding its spread among different social classes, it is high time to write about ‘Visaranai- translation is interrogation’, a movie that jolted me for a long time. The movie directed by revenge saga boss Vetrimaran kept me at a loss for quite a long due to its harsh treatment on human Psyche. The movie which was Indian submission to the Oscar in 2016 is deeply rooted in the class struggle incepted in the sub-continent by the Aryans more than 2000 years ago. How the formation of ethics and law is different for different stakeholders in society is shown with nuanced sublimity. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) passed in 1948 provided equal rights to all people but still, people are dying by Greek or Italian coastguards in the Mediterranean. So, from Aryans to the so-called elites of the 21st Century, the treatment of people in the society is still stratified. That’s where Vetrimaran s...

‘Star Jalsha’ or it is within us?

Image
Tanviruzzaman Tonay:  Recently several liberal activists and concern Bangladeshis demanded to scrap of airing Indian Bengali Channels in Bangladesh. The smoke of this demand surrounded the mind of general (majority) Bangladeshis who also demanded to keep airing these channels in Bangladesh.   A writ petition has been filed in this connection where the court rejected the fear of liberal mind and ordered to proceed on with airing the TV Channels in the country. Now the question arouses the impact of airing Indian Bengali channel in Bangladesh. In overall point of view, the impact of this channel airing in Bangladesh is quite thunderous on the mind of general people of Bangladesh. There was an incident occurred in Sylhet where two parties were engaged in the serious fight over watching drama series ‘Kiron Mala’ in Television. The conflict ended in mass causalities. I am not the torch bearer for the heritage of Bangladesh but can easily say that our elderly women (Moth...

Ship of Theseus: The greatest knowledge is knowing nothing

Image
Tanviruzzaman Tonay: Hello everyone, I am writing my interpretation of the movie called Ship of Theseus. The movie directed by Anant Gandhi often considered as one of the path breaking cinema in the history of Indian cinema is now enjoying a cult following. I personally fascinated with the forms and visualization of this cinematic experience. Before talking about the movie I would like to discuss something about the ‘ship of Theseus’ paradox. We everybody knows who Theseus was but do not know about the paradox called Ship of Theseus. For example, the famous ship of warrior Theseus is now kept in a museum. It is made of wood and the woods are rotting day by day and the museum owner is replacing the woods with new one. At one point all the woods will be replaced by the new woods. And the ship will be a complete new one. Another example is that the scientist found a way to form the rotten woods in a new way and made another ship just like the real one at the end. Now the point...

Trump regime and urgency of Marshella Ali and ‘The Salesman’ to win an Oscar

Image
Tanviruzzaman: Donald Trump, the US president restored his vengeance upon sexist, racial and religious fraternity that conjoins the world. His wrathful comments just before the US election helped him to gain popularity in term of mass appeal but the ratio difference of his vote between liberals and masses are huge. The imbalance of his power and the opinion of US media is polarizing day by day. In such time when Trump within his first few months banned people from seven Islamic country entering to United State, Marshella Ali and ‘The Salesman’ won big awards in the 89th Academy Award.  Marsheela Ali, who played a mentor in ‘Moonlight’ become the first Muslim to win the Academy award for acting. Do, giving award to him is a matter of resistance or it is a mere coincidence. ‘Moonlight’ showcased the issue of black people in United State and the constant ‘othering’. But, discourse created by blacks over period of time is now well appreciated in Hollywood. Marsheela Ali rep...
